Assistant Vice President for Enterprise Risk Management

Knowledge Services is actively seeking an Assistant Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management for a full time, direct hire opportunity with our client based in Indianapolis, IN. This person will need to work onsite for the first few months to meet staff members and learn organization culture and then can move to a hybrid role.

Travel: This position will require in-state travel up to 20% of the time.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the Vice President of Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness, the Assistant Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management (AVP-ERM) designs and implements a framework for enterprise risk management. In addition to providing oversight of risk management and insurance programs, the AVP-ERM will work with the Executive Leadership Team and with the Governing Board through its Audit Committee to establish tolerance and appetite for risk in a variety of areas, including administrative actions, student activities and academic programming. This role operates under a Matrix structure. The AVP-ERM is a strategic partner for departments across the organization to come alongside and support through any situations requiring Campuses and units to manage risk and the opportunity it engenders. The AVP-ERM will provide effective leadership and administration for day-to-day operations.

The AVP-ERM will lead the risk financing/insurance programs by developing key initiatives and setting insurance renewal strategies for the statewide risk management function for the College through review and evaluation of emerging markets, trends, best practices, threat assessments, needs analysis and appetite for risk. The AVP-ERM will oversee all aspects of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), and will support Emergency Preparedness with programs, procedures and best practices for risk mitigation activities, as applicable.

• Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team, Governing Board Audit Committee, Campus Chancellors and constituents at all levels of the institution to determine the appetite and tolerance for risk.
• Able to implement an enterprise risk management strategy statewide
• Perform risk assessments and determines alignment with the goals of the College.
• Work closely with the Internal Auditor, College Counsel, Controller, and others as appropriate.
• Promote an environment of continuous improvement of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) processes and analysis of best practices.
• Oversee the management of risk financing and insurance programs, and investigation/resolution of claims against the College.
• Develop and co-chair a Risk Council.
• Contributes to business continuity planning.
• Lead the design and sustainability of a robust EHS program system-wide.
• Responsible for oversight and contribution to the department goals as they directly correlate with the long-term goals of the College.
• Provide mentorship and support professional development opportunities that align with department goals and succession planning.
• Establish a comprehensive enterprise risk management framework within various cross-functional areas.
• Monitor the external environment for emerging threats and advise relevant stakeholders on the appropriate course of action.
• Liaise with internal and external counsel, internal personnel and insurance companies, as necessary.
• Serve as a risk advisor/resource to legal, finance, procurement, and other departments or campuses needing assistance with new or existing contract review and insurance language, and provide recommendations for verbiage and/or insurance implications.
• Participate and play an active role in Safety Committee and International Travel Committee meetings.
• Develop and prepare a risk management budget, ensuring expenses do not exceed budgeted allocations and approved invoices.
• Review Worker’s Compensation registers, approve payments, and maintain Worker’s Compensation budget spreadsheet.
• Examine the use of realistic and cost-effective opportunities that balance self-funded retentions, deductibles with commercial insurance policies and ensure insurance products appropriately meet the needs for protection of College assets and business objectives; without being over or under insured and being a good steward of the College’s monies.
• Conduct on-going assessments of the overall insurance program and perform benchmarking or other activities that evaluate product types, identify gaps/overlaps, and/or limits of coverage. Create annual insurance submission based upon renewal information gathered and provided by the Executive Director of RM&I.
• Using broker expertise, consult with and secure feedback for new RM&I initiatives as a means to reduce claims experience and secure favorable renewal pricing.
• Manage and collaborate with broker(s) for new insurance placements or changes to existing program structure. Participate and play an active role in annual renewal strategy and proposal meetings.
• Negotiate with insurance companies, brokers or agencies with respect to premiums, terms and conditions, renewals and modifications of insurance contracts. Conduct comparison analysis of expiring to renewal policies and identify changes in verbiage, added, removed, or edited, and discuss with broker.
• Update and maintain Schedules of Insurance, Premium Summaries, Insurance Structure spreadsheets, and oversee the maintenance of a current, accurate list of values for all College and/or Foundation owned properties.
• Participate and play an active role in quarterly Claims Review meetings.
• Lead the development and process for RFPs when deemed appropriate.

• Bachelor’s degree and industry certification required.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible risk management experience in a complex environment with a demonstrated understanding of higher education is required.
• Experience in an ERM environment required.
• Must have supervisory or leadership experience with ability to manage highly specialized staff.;
• Must demonstrate creative problem-solving and strategic planning to constructively generate strategies for complex problems and concepts.
• Contract analysis and management experience required.
• Must be a self-directed initiator with ability to collaborate and establish rapport quickly and possess excellent relationship management skills.
• Strong ability to manage and adjust competing priorities and understand the importance of time sensitive delivery required.
• Must be highly organized with attention to detail;
• The ability to manage highly confidential and time sensitive information is required.
• Must demonstrate strong presentation skills, including public speaking and presentation creation using Power Point or similar program.
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Must be willing and able to travel periodically.

• Master’s degree and Associate in Risk Management (ARM) certification is preferred

• Experience in a post-secondary educational environment is preferred
