Overview

Knowledge Services is actively seeking a Firmware Engineering Manager for a full time, direct hire opportunity in a suburb of Denver, CO. This role will be a hybrid work schedule.

Responsibilities

  • The candidate will lead a team of firmware engineers that are responsible for new product development, product improvements and technical production support. Team consists of on-site, hybrid, remote and offshore firmware engineers
  • Provide leadership to the firmware engineering team, which includes assessing, coaching, mentoring, motivating, and developing talent
  • Work in collaboration with Engineering Product Line Managers to manage performance of firmware engineering team on various projects/products
  • Candidate will provide a proactive technical leadership position, with ability to think big picture for future growth, and successfully implement firmware engineering projects. The experience and successes create a foundation for potential future growth advancement and rotation opportunities in areas of technical leadership, product, platform, systems, management, mentorship and others
  • Institutionalize firmware engineering process/tools standards to ensure consistent high-quality output
  • Manage third party vendors for development and maintenance done offshore
    Manage resource allocation
  • Ensure that formal project management & tracking disciplines are used on managed NPD projects
  • Provide clear communications to engineering leadership and others outside of engineering
    Work with and support manufacturing & operations in test code development to support in-line functional testing
  • Participate in the strategic decisions about technology feasibility, definition, and implementation of firmware products including firmware architectures
  • Working with Systems, Systems Test, Hardware, Software and Electro-Mechanical Engineering leadership to deliver on product/program commitments as well as general improvements through Electronic Locks and Americas Engineering initiatives
  • Lead, listen to and motivate a diverse team of technical professionals on technical, engagement and career fronts
  • Participate in resource planning, including professional development, succession and budgeting preparation. Resource planning may include the use of outside contractors
  • Work with Systems and Software to establish, maintain and enforce Software/Firmware development processes and practices
  • Participate in regular design and code reviews
  • Participate and support verification & validation testing of firmware and systems

 

Day to Day: 

  • 1/3 of the role is Project Management. This individual will be managing 5-6 project leads on the team at one time, there will be leads on each team and managing the day to day, this individual will ensure leads are following processes and making sure team members are communicating to other functions. At the end of the day, responsible for delivery of projects. 
  • 1/3 People Management : Resourcing projects, Planning projects coming out in the future and where the resources will be placed. as well as day to day people management, career roadmaps, promotion plans, comp increases  
  • 1/3 General Process improvements. How can we as a firmware org do things better? What can we do to improve things? Any Tools improvements? Strategize what is coming. 

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  •  Strong familiarity with full Firmware Life Cycle Development Process as required in product development.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Firmware, Embedded Software, Computer Science and/or Electrical Engineering focus preferred
  • 7 plus years’ experience in designing firmware products including at least 2 years in a management role- Individual will be managing team of 9. 
  • Experience defining firmware architecture and microcontroller-based firmware design and development including tools, metrics and processes
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to effectively collaborate across functional areas
  • Demonstrated experience in firmware design, analysis and development
  • Must have background in embedded software development
  • Significant experience in embedded microcontroller system design
  • Product design experience from concept to production
  • Demonstrated technical coaching and mentoring skills
  • Strong leadership, motivational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience leading project teams to deliver programs on time and on budget
  • Strong engineering project management skills
  • Ability to work across multiple sites/teams domestically and internationally
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills and have the ability and experience to manage tasks and projects.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed with strong continuing aspirations to take on larger roles.
  • Ability to translate FW for non-technical leaders in the organization.
  • Approximately 10% travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry experience in access control is beneficial
  • Master’s degree in a technical field or business field is desirable
  • Familiarity of Agile processes in a Software Life Cycle Development (SLDC) is preferred
  • Familiarity with cloud-based configuration management and software management tools like Jira or Azure DevOps is a plus
